ROBERT NURDEN.jpg

Robert Nurden, is an author and journalist, whose book, I Always Wanted To Be A Dad: Men Without Children, was published in August 2023. It describes the experience of one’s man’s journey through the pain and regret - and ultimate acceptance - of never becoming the father he longed to be.

Robert’s two-hander play, Empty, which also focuses on unwanted childlessness, had a rehearsed reading at the Cockpit Theatre, London, in September 2025. An extract was also performed at Storyhouse, Chester, in the same month. Empty is to receive five performances in London in 2026.

He has written an acclaimed biography of his maverick grandfather, the Rev Stanley James – cowboy, hobo, soldier, Nonconformist minister, pacifist, author and Catholic convert. Between Heaven and Earth: A Journey with My Grandfather was published in 2021.

Robert was a feature writer and sub-editor for the Guardian, Independent and Daily Telegraph, as well as many other national newspapers and magazines. He worked for the charity and development agency VSO and spent time as a volunteer worker in Asia and Africa.

He was also a teacher of English as a foreign language and journalism in London for 10 years and in Bulgaria 2007-9.
