Memento
Cornelia Dance Company - Italy
This guest performance is supported by the Italian Cultural Institute in Bulgaria
Memento is a dance performance based on the non-event. Like in the Beckettian masterpiece, Waiting for Godot, tension is created by the succession of hopes that can’t find a concrete outlet. Thus, in the same way, in life, every moment is the waiting for something definitive which we eventually find out to be fragmented and subjective, once we think we have achieved it. In the choreography, performers experience this waiting and, in search for a definitive answer – whether divine or not - to their existential condition, they seek comfort from each other, they challenge each other, or, as in a chorus, they all tend toward the same point. At the end, the destination of their journey will be realised in the memory (memento means, precisely, “remember”) of these relationships and their feelings, and the same destination will turn into a ritual moment, a sacred, and thus eternal, act.

Cornelia Dance Company was founded in 2019 in Naples by Nyko Piscopo, Nicolas Grimaldi Capitello, Eleonora Greco, Leopoldo Guadagno and Francesco Russo, recognized by the Ministry of Culture in 2021 and Campania Region (Italy) from 2023. The Cornelia Team develops its productions in an artistic dimension between tradition and innovation - PAST/PRESENT/FUTURE - with the aim of questioning the codes of dance and creating a space for conscious research on the body in movement. The company thrives on collaborations with professionals from other disciplines, such as digital & visual artists, to make artistic creation more fluid and free. In this dynamic scenario, the attention is moving towards contemporary themes such as the inclusiveness of the dancing body in all its forms and aesthetics, the expressive need of the new and old generations. The company works in Italy and abroad: artistic productions are presented in several Italian theatres (Fondazione Nazionale della Danza - Arterballetto, Teatro delle Muse in Ancona, Teatro Bellini in Napoli, Teatro comunale in Vicenza, Teatri di Siena and many more) and they take part in the most important dance and video dance festivals both nationally (Biennale di Venezia 2020, Campania Teatro Festival 2021, VisAVi Gorizia and many more) and internationally (Filmpride in Brighton, Choreoscope in Barcelona), as well as projects streamed online in New York, London, Belgrade, Sweden, Iran.
